Lake Turano

Lake Turano is a wonderful area for those who love pristine nature and outdoor activities, such as trekking and fishing, which can be done in the Lake Turano Reserve along the lake shore, in the shade of the majestic Mountains, Filone and Navegna. Turano is also a beautiful place for a drive with its picturesque towns, the lake itself and the mountains which serve as a spectacular back drop. Lake Turano is 530m above sea level and is a hydroelectric reservoir that was created on the Turano River with a dam built in 1939 by Benito Mussolini. The lake itself is full of fish: eels, pike, perch, trout, grayling, bream and crayfish. Castel di Tora and Colle di Tora villages were once contended by the great Roman Orsini, Brancaleoni and Barberini families. Today they are sleepy hamlets affording wonderful views, with narrow, evocative stone cobbled streets and ruins of castles and fortresses. The lake is just a 10 minute drive from Roccasinibalda and 20 minutes from La Torricella.
